Glass Scientist

Location: Granville, Ohio - United States PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Glass Scientist will collaborate across all glass platforms within the Insulation Systems business to facilitate growth through the development of new glass compositions and improved quantification of the material >> product property relationship. The successful candidate will enjoy managing multiple technical challenges and working collaboratively across the Owens Corning S&T organization. A primary area of work will be the development of improved glass formulations to aid in delivering improved product performance and cost position. The Glass Scientist will also work to significantly improve our current characterization methodologies and composition-product property models, to facilitate rapid development and deployment of new products. Reports to : Senior Glass Scientist - Innovation JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Live the Owens Corning safety stand (10%) We believe all injuries are preventable Take a proactive approach toward personal and team safety to drive to our goal of -0- injuries and accidents Actively participate in team safety events and lead within personal areas of responsibility Formulation development for new and improved Insulation products (40%) Working with key stakeholders within ISB, identify key areas where development of new glass formulations will drive future growth Work with the glass teams in Granville to develop and execute robust plans to develop formulations Collaborate with Glass Technology and Product Development teams to deploy developed solutions Drive adoption of improved characterization technologies (20%) Facilitate data-based design and decision making with improved characterization of glass properties related to product performance Working with key stakeholders within ISB, identify key areas where development of new characterization methods will create value and facilitate growth, and act to develop needed methods Early focus will be on environmental and corrosion related metrics to facilitate rapid prototyping and product property predictions Will impact across all ISB platforms Evolve chemistry-property-product modelling (30%) Starting from existing, develop data and computational methods to accurately predict key product properties, such as thermal conductivity, from material properties Work directly with product teams to prioritize areas with highest growth potential Delivery integrated design tools to facilitate rapid product development JOB REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : MS in Glass Science, Ceramic Science, or Material Science, with focus on glass/inorganic materials development. A PhD is preferred. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE : 3-10 years of experience in an industrial R&D environment with a record of delivery of significant product developments or productivity enhancements Experience primarily with silicate glass systems Product development/design experience using Stage-Gate, Lean 6sigma, or other structured design approaches a plus Ability to travel 15-30% and support trial work in a manufacturing environment KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES : Design of silicate glass systems to meet new and existing product requirements Understanding of laboratory-scale glass melting and fabrication Modelling of composition-structure-property relationships using statistical, neural network, and more advanced predictive methods Experience and understating of common glass testing and characterization methods including chemical analysis, microscopy, thermo-physical measurements, and product focused mechanical and environmental tests Experience with fiber glass or cellular glass a plus Understanding of glass batch and melting technology to facilitate interaction with the glass technology team #LI-LY1 About Owens Corning Owens Corning (NYSE: OC) develops, manufactures and markets insulation, roofing, and fiberglass composites. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
