Mechanical Design Engineer - Additive Manufacturing

Location: Granville, Ohio - United States PURPOSE OF THE JOB Owens Corning has an opening for a Mechanical Design Engineer - Additive Manufacturing (AM) to develop and implement additive manufacturing technologies for a wide variety of process related opportunities. We are looking for a Sr. Engineer /CAD Modeler who has Mechanical Design, Mechanical Integrity, Heat transfer and CAD experience. The AM technique enables brand new ways to design process based components with improved functionality, shortened lead time, and lower costs. This requires new engineering skills for design and simulation of parts, and new methods are being developed in several areas like concept generation, heat transfer, and materials. The Advanced Manufacturing team is launching a dedicated AM role to quickly capture how to best use the new design features made available by AM and to establish engineering practices relating to that. Responsibilities in support of the development and/or introduction of advanced manufacturing technologies such as AM include the following: Drive key additive manufacturing technology development opportunities from CAD model, to part builds, and through post-processing Interface with all business units within Owens Corning, and the Front-End Innovations (FEI) Lab, to provide expertise and support in the development and deployment of AM techniques and advanced material systems Act as a subject matter expert on a business-wide development team to lead multiple projects Evaluate AM systems for procurement and development, generate standard operating procedures for AM systems, discover and develop part candidates that benefit from additive manufacturing, as well as qualify and control machine/post processing parameters to achieve sound AM parts Educate engineers to aid in the adoption of AM techniques ensuring engineers know the benefits and limitations of the technology for adaptation in their own roles Continue and expand existing programs in support of technical, innovation and business strategies Plan, execute & evaluate validation tests for new components and concepts Prepare technical reports and monthly project summaries incorporating conclusions and recommendations The Sr Engineer will help build up AM design and simulation know-how in an efficient way, by collaborating with team members working in close co-operation on different components & disciplines and both new components and repair AM-projects. This individual will be expected to apply mathematical and scientific principles to the design, development and operational evaluation of AM components. The activities will be both internally (plant level) and externally (suppliers) focused. The position reports to the Director of Advanced Technologies & Methods. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Knowing Our Products and Processes Develops an understanding of the positioning of our products in the marketplace. Understand industry AM trends and how process changes influence new technology demands. Partners with customers and stakeholders to scope new solutions and to translate needs into innovation opportunities. Seek solutions that can be deployed horizontally through the various Owens Corning business portfolios. Developing and Executing the Technology Strategy Engage in project planning teams to identify AM opportunities. Continuously drives to deliver the strategic objectives and supporting goals. Establish factory and laboratory examples of AM solutions that can be scaled and deployed to Owens Corning operations. Introduce new, or improve existing, process solutions in factory production lines to advance existing processes via AM technology. Provide technology support for the direction of AM within Owens Corning. Builds rapport and develops partnerships to work effectively with all levels across the organization including Science & Technology, FEI, and Operations. Process Innovation & New Product Industrialization Leverage Open Innovation and Lean Startup methodologies as a competitive weapon and establishes OC in the market as a preferred partner for technology commercialization. Develop processes for new products with a focus on AM to advance our capabilities at a rapid MVP (minimum viable product) rate. Growing Our People Collaborates on Lean Startup and TPM methodologies as our culture for doing rapid innovation and early management as a core competency of the organization. Engage in growth and development (i.e. seminars, further education, etc) for your area of expertise. Drive competitive advantage and lean cost structure in your space. Utilizes ?team of teams? concepts with internal and external stakeholders to build robust programs with rapid innovation cycles. Help other teams succeed through easy-to-use tooling, monitoring, and automation that you create. JOB REQUIREMENTS Experience and Knowledge Requirements: A Master?s Degree with at least 2 years of experience in mechanical engineering or in a related area is preferred, but individuals with a Bachelor?s Degree and at least 5 years of experience and outstanding accomplishments in the technical areas of interest will be considered. Knowledge and experience in the following areas: Performing independent research to advance the state of additive manufacturing in support of aggressive product development cycles Working knowledge of various metal and plastic additive manufacturing methods including design for additive manufacturing, support structures, and machine operation - laser optics and powder handling. CAD proficiency: SolidWorks preferred. Must be able to interpret, edit, and create engineering CAD drawings Working knowledge of traditional manufacturing techniques such as multi-axis milling, surface grinding, wire EDM, heat treatment, brazing, welding, and surface finishing Experience in GD&T and component tolerance inspection Able to work well in an integrated team including daily interactions with all stakeholders at all levels Excellent communicator both verbal and written with the capability to support program progression review meetings Strong results orientation balanced by concern for people Self-confident and highly motivated with a strong orientation toward continuous improvement A strong technically hands-on oriented engineer with clearly demonstrated experience and a track record of developing additively manufactured components. Proven technical experiences in manufacturing or deploying AM components. Understands industry trends, direction and standards that guide new technology offerings, and uses technology and market intelligence to provide strategic recommendations on initiatives to achieve business objectives. Proficiency in 3D CAD modeling (SOLIDWORKS preferred). Good mechanical aptitude and knowledge. High Strategic Relevance Demonstrated understanding of Lean Manufacturing principals. Experience in manufacturing operations and management, capital implementation and project startup. Strong analytical, problem solving, communication, and presentation skills. Good project management skills with ability to create and communicate technical documentation.
