Batch and Glass Melting Engineer (Glass Defects)

Location: Granville, Ohio - United States PURPOSE OF THE JOB The Focused Improvement -Batch & Glass Melting Defect Portfolio Engineer will drive the successful understanding of process defects through the TPM methodology of loss tree and glass defects through OC established break study methodology. The successful individual must be able to review and interpret loss trees to identify opportunities for imparting technical guidance, implementation of improvement and tracking the results to support efficiency improvements at our manufacturing facilities. They will work closely with plants and technical experts to establish standardized processes, identify and implement best practices in the areas of hot end process. This role is key in activities related to process escalation reviews and collaborating with technical experts to identify opportunities for eliminating escalations through best practices, procedural improvements, training and new technology implementation. Reports to : Focused Improvement Leader Span of Control : 0 direct reports, provides technical direction to (junior) FI Batch Engr, Furnace Engr, and Furnace Development Program engineers in training. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES Operations Plant Technical Support with a defect focus (70%) SME and mentor the OC CSB plant batch, furnace and forming engineers at supported plants and globally by establishing close working relationships through phone contact, network meetings and visits Continuously review plant Loss Trees, process break Study that will support to identify Opportunities for Process Improvement. Lead and assist plant teams for the break study data collection at plant level and bring the plant?s team to OC break study analytical standard level. Create a robust system to maintain historical data and action learned. Work closely with Petrography lab SMEs for extensive studies on defect identification Evaluate escalations in the batch & melting processes and review Root cause analysis(RCA) to mitigate future escalations. Collaborate with plant technical leaders, forming engineers and melting engineers to support FI projects that have an impact on Loss tree and escalation elimination. Conduct and lead audits and surveys to identify gaps and prioritize CE/NE improvement opportunities Operational ? Loss Trees, track process improvements, process audits that support Break study activities Process Reviews ? FI project reviews, Escalation RCA, Bead Break Study improvement projects, FMEA, U-Point & Management of change (MOC) Facilitate major plant Initiatives and drive a Zero Injury, Zero Defect, Zero Loss Culture FI- Focused Improvement Batch and Melting (30%) Conduct and lead audits and surveys to identify gaps and prioritize CE/NE improvement opportunities Operational ? Assist Plant batch engineers on Incoming raw material quality evaluation, and Batch weighing operations audit to track Batching KPIs Collaborate with Global batch engineers to evaluate raw material vendor process for quality consistency and vendor development initiatives Process Reviews ? FI project reviews, Escalation RCA, Bead Break Study improvement projects, FMEA, U-Point & Management of change (MOC) Facilitate major plant Initiatives and drive a Zero Injury, Zero Defect, Zero Loss Culture Collaborate with Global batch engineers to evaluate raw material vendor process for quality consistency and vendor development initiatives JOB REQUIREMENTS MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS : B.S. in Geology, Chemistry, Glass science, Materials science, Engineering. PREFERRED EXPERIENCE : The candidate should have minimum of 4 years manufacturing experience in the Glass Science, Glass melting, Geological Science, petrography, glass defect analysis. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES : Experience working with Science and Technology (S&T), corporate engineering and glass melting process. Familiarity with geology, material characterization and microscopic study, glass melting, refractory materials and glass raw materials is desired. Capable of clearly communicating technical concepts and results Comfortable sharing (written and verbal) with all levels of operations from operators to plant leaders to vice presidents to explain and demonstrate the benefits and risks of any action plant, program or project Use influence and diplomacy to achieve the best results for the business by collaboration and teamwork Deliver prompt accurate results independently or as part of a team which demonstrates input, organizational abilities and technical skills across the organization Motivate others who are not direct reports to accomplish tasks and improve operations Proficient in the definition and solution of complex technical problems Frequent travel (30 40%) is inherent in this position. At times, the candidate will be expected to travel without notice to support Manufacturing during emergency conditions. Must be able to travel globally. Interest to recognize, identify and apply new technical knowledge in areas of specialization, with ability to go outside immediate environment to seek direction, input new ideas, engineering resources, equipment, etc. General computer skills (ex.
